A Sonographer performs diagnostic patient care services using an ultrasound machine. He/She communicates accurate results to the patient during diagnostic examinations.


  • Performs diagnostic procedures using ultrasound
  • Schedule and prepares patients for procedures
  • Obtain and record patient history
  • Maneuver patients into the appropriate position for the procedure
  • Spread gel onto the part of the patient’s body where the scan is needed
  • Use transducer to study images of organs, tissues inside the body
  • Examine abdomen, breasts, female reproductive system, prostate, heart and blood vessels
  • Records anatomical, pathological, and/or physiological data for interpretation by a physician
  • Performs clinical assessment during examinations
  • Identifies normal and abnormal findings
  • Maintains ultrasound equipment and supplies
  • Prepare preliminary reports
  • Address problems and inquiries from patient
  • Organize daily work schedule
  • Order further testing if needed
  • Manage imaging departments
